IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognised English language proficiency test for non-native English speakers who plan to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. It is accepted by thousands of universities, employers, professional bodies, and governments across destinations such as the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA, and Europe.

The test assesses all four essential language skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—focusing on both academic and real-life communication

What is IELTS?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized English language proficiency test for non-native English speakers who want to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. It assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills needed for academic and real-life communication.

Types of IELTS

IELTS Academic:
• Required for university admissions, professional registration, and higher education.
• Accepted by universities in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

IELTS General Training:
• Designed for work experience, immigration, and secondary education.
• Commonly used for PR and visa applications (UK, Canada, Australia).

IELTS for UKVI:
• A Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the UK Home Office.
• Required for specific UK visa categories.

IELTS Exam Structure & Pattern (2026)

IELTS is available in both paper-based and computer-based formats.

IELTS Test Format

Total Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

Sections:

  1. Listening
    o 40 questions | 30 minutes (+10 minutes transfer time for paper-based)
    o Audio recordings of conversations & lectures

  2. Reading
    o 40 questions | 60 minutes
    o Academic or General version based on test type

  3. Writing
    o 2 tasks | 60 minutes
    o Academic: Graph/Essay
    o General: Letter/Essay

  4. Speaking
    o 11–14 minutes
    o Face-to-face interview with a certified examiner

Scoring

• Each section is scored on a Band Scale of 0–9
Overall Band Score: Average of all four sections
• Scores reported in half bands (e.g., 6.5, 7.0, 7.5)

Mode of Test

Computer-based IELTS: Results in 3–5 days
Paper-based IELTS: Results in ~13 days
• Speaking test may be on the same day or within 7 days before/after the main test

Registration & Score Reporting

Registration: Online through official IELTS test partners (IDP / British Council)
Score Reporting:
o Test takers can send scores to up to 5 institutions for free
o Additional reports may incur a fee
• IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date

IELTS UKVI: ₹17,500 – ₹18,000
